In the unfortunate event of suffering a bereavement, the following action should be taken:
1 Inform the shul office as soon as possible (funerals take some time to arrange). They will need to know the Jewish name of the deceased (this can be found on the Jewish marriage certificate - the Ketuba—if the person was married), whether a plot was reserved, who needs keriah and an address where shiva will take place. 2 Obtain a certificate of death from a doctor and register the death at the Registrar of Births, Marriages & Deaths at the Town Hall, The Headrow, Leeds. A green slip will be given to you by the Registrar which needs to be taken as soon as possible to the shul office.
Members are not charged for a funeral.
The Etz Chaim cemetery address is: New Farnley Cemetery 717 Whitehall Road, Leeds LS12 6JL
If someone dies on Shabbat or Yom Tov, the body is mukse and cannot be touched. The body should be covered and a Jew should stay with the deceased until the conclusion of Shabbat when arrangements can be made as above.
